Phoenix Farm believes in breeding sound, sensible citizens who are easy to train and handle. We combine the best Thoroughbred blood with the blood of other breeds to create a horse that is kind, sensible, and enjoys working with their human companions. While we do not breed on a continuous basis, we do breed from time to time with the highest standards in mind.

New Arrival!

We had a surprise arrival this year at Phoenix Farm! After many years of trying, our pair of Sicillian Donkeys, Mr. Steve and Sage, produced a jennet we have dubbed Stevie Nicks! Her arrival was rather shocking and dramatic, but she has been a joyous addition to our farm!

Lizzie’s Hero:
16.3 hands
Dark Bay Throughbred Mare by Partner’s Hero out of Lizzie of Live Oak by Caveat

Our lovely girl Lizzie had the size, substance, bone, and temperament that are becoming more and more difficult to find in the modern Thoroughbred. Her classic Thoroughbred lines are filled with class and stamina, and her conformation and movement are a cut above the rest. Bred and hand selected for the broodmare barn by noted breeding operation Acorn Hill Farm, Lizzie wass an asset to our breeding program. Since she was going to be hanging around with nothing to do in 2008, we decided to get her going under saddle to prove that she would make a lovely riding horse as well as a lovely Mom. She is pictured above with 90 days of under saddle work under her belt.

Phaedra is simply the whole package, great mover, superior athleticism, and the most affectionate "in your pocket" personality. She nickers at every human who walks by, and is always looking for a good scratch. Oh, and her sire is one of the most dominant North American producers of sporthorses in the past two decades.

Ballista is a beautiful girl. Her full sister was LAEC Res. Champ in 2003. Ballista has beautiful, correct conformation, with great bone, excellent movement and a sensitive but loving temperament perfect for the modern sporthorse.

Black Canadian crossbred mare
Owned by Duck Hollow Farm, Vershire, Vermont

“Cali” is everything that people love about a crossbred—size, temperament, and kindness. She is the mother of four of Phoenix Farm's young horses.

Cruiser and Seeker were both by the Anglo Arab advanced level eventing stallion Quartermaster. Cruiser has gone on to a wonderful new home with the Stokes family, and Seeker, who won his first outing at BN with John is now winning events for his new Mom, Kyana. (See the sold section of our Horses for Sale page for additional pics and info).

Phoenix Sparrow ("Sparrow"), a bay with chrome filly born in 2007, and Phoenix Torchwood ("Ianto') and dark bay with chrome colt born in 2008 are both by Denny Emerson's Reputed Testamony. Sparrow will be retained as a competition horse, and for the breeding herd, but Ianto will be available for sale in the spring of 2009.

Gussie Up
16 hand
Dark bay Irish Thoroughbred mare by Wayne County (IRE) out of Gussie by Deerhound.

This flashy mare’s pedigree reads like a who’s who of class and success in both the sport world and the racing world. In the first three generations she features Sadler’s Wells, Sir Ivor, Danzig, Riverman, and Northern Dancer. The blood of these great champions has culminated in Gussie, an exceptionally balanced, correct, and gorgeous individual. Gussie has already produced two top-notch foals for eventer Sharon White, and in 2007 produced an outstanding filly by Denny Emerson’s Irish Sporthorse Stallion Formula One.

Native Monarch 1986-2006 (click here for more information)
16.2 hand
Bay Thoroughbred mare by Imperial Native out of Bold Tiara, by Bold Monarch

"Ariel" is our first broodmare, and though her time in the breeding shed was shorter and less fruitful than we'd hoped, there is no denying the special place she holds in our hearts. John bought Ariel in 1992, as an amateur steeplechase prospect. She was a 10-time winner on the flat track, including winning a race with a fractured front leg. She was successful racing over timber and national fences, and in 1995 John began eventing her. She competed through the training level when an accident left her missing much of her front fetlock and her future terribly in doubt--Ariel was one of the first horses to undergo the now-common infusion technique for treating infected joints. She was given a less than 20% chance for survival, but the tough old girl fought back to soundness. She was retired from competition, but continued to enjoy foxhunting. In 1997 she was bred to the Secretariat son Class Secret, and produced our first homebred, Phoenix Secret. Unfortunately, a pre-partum uterine infection has proved persistent, even with cultures sent to many labs to try to work out a antibiotic protocol. After slipping three foals, Ariel was retired from breeding, and sent to live at our sister farm, Duck Hollow, in Vershire, Vermont, where she is still competing at USEA recognized events at the Novice level at the ripe old age of 20. This mare has been the epitome of the great American Thoroughbred--tough, strong, talented, resilient and brave.
